You can plan your trip very conveniently on the website www.9292ov.nl. Your destination is the address ‘Landsdiep 4, City: t Horntje or Den Hoorn (Texel).
The island of Texel is located about 90 km North of Amsterdam and can be reached conveniently by train from Amsterdam Central Station or Amsterdam-Sloterdijk Station to the city of Den Helder (final destination of the train). The ferry trip from Den Helder to Texel takes only 20 minutes (for the ferry scheme see also www.teso.nl ).
By train from Amsterdam (Duivendrecht / Central Station and Sloterdijk) / Utrecht / Arnhem / Nijmegen: take the direct connection to the city of Den Helder. The Intercity train that connects best with the TESO ferry leaves Amsterdam Central Station (CS) every hour at XX:41 hr and arrives in Den Helder railway station at (XX+1):56 hr.
By train from Schiphol airport: take any train that stops at the ‘Amsterdam-Sloterdijk’ railway station. The trains coming from Schiphol stop at the 2nd floor of the station, whereas all trains to Den Helder leave at the ground floor level. The Intercity trains connecting best to the TESO ferry from Den Helder to Texel leave Amsterdam-Sloterdijk Station every hour at XX:48 hr and arrive in Den Helder at (XX+1):56.
Once you have arrived in Den Helder (final destination of the train) you take bus 33 at the terminal directly next to the railway station. This bus departs at (XX+2):12 hour from Den Helder train station
If your car has navigation, choose City: 'Den Helder'; Street 'Havenplein 3'.
From Amsterdam to Den Helder:
Travel north along highway A7. Leave the highway near the village of ‘Den Oever’ and travel along the N99 and the N250 to the city of ‘Den Helder’.
From Haarlem / Alkmaar to Den Helder:
Travel north on the A9 to the city of Alkmaar and continue on the N9/N250 to Den Helder (80 km/h max, regular speed checks!). Once in Den Helder, follow the direction ‘Boot Texel’. You can either take your car on the ferry, or leave it behind at the parking lot next to the ferry terminal in Den Helder (we do not advise this if you own a really beautiful car).
From Friesland / Groningen (/ Bremen) to Den Helder:
Travel (south-)west along highway A7 over the ‘Afsluitdijk’, which separates the Wadden Sea from the ‘IJsselmeer’ (lake IJssel). Leave the highway directly after the sluices at the end of the ‘Afsluitdijk’ near the village of ‘Den Oever’ and follow the N99/N250 in the direction of ‘Den Helder’.
Once in Den Helder, follow the direction ‘Boot Texel’. You can either take your car on the ferry, or leave it behind at the parking lot next to the ferry terminal in Den Helder (we do not advise this if you own a really beautiful car).
Each hour at XX:30 between 06:30 and 21:30, the TESO ferry crosses the ‘Marsdiep’ tidal inlet between the city of Den Helder and the isle of Texel. It departs from the island of Texel to Den Helder each hour at XX:00 between 06:00 and 21:00. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. Occasionally, both ferries are in active service, resulting in a traveling scheme with a double frequency. More information can be found on TESO.
NIOZ is located at about 5 minutes walking distance from the ferry terminal at Texel. When you disembark from the ferry, turn sharp right immediately. Signs will lead you to the main entrance or the entrance for goods deliveries.
For the NIOZ harbour, please first follow the road to the goods delivery entrance. Then continue on the road at the foot of the dike (‘Zuiderhaaks’). This is a dead-end street which ends at the NIOZ harbour. The aquarium building is located at the far end of the institute pointing towards the NIOZ harbour. You may park your car or bicycle here.
If you arrive at Schiphol (Amsterdam airport) or Brussels airport you can reach Yerseke by car or by train in about 2 hours. Yerseke is about 150 km from Schiphol airport (direct train connection each hour) and about 100 km from Brussels airport (indirect train connection each hour). There are also international airports at Antwerp (ca. 50 km, from some UK airports only) and Rotterdam (ca. 100 km), but there are no railway stations at these airports.
By public transport
Kruiningen-Yerseke is an Intercity Railway Station on the track Amsterdam-Roosendaal-Vlissingen. Both from Brussels and Amsterdam the journey lasts about 2 hours. When you arrive at the Kruiningen-Yerseke railway station you can take the bus to "Langeville" or a taxi.
Train and bus schedules change regularly and can be downloaded from 9292ov. Depart at busstop 'Langeville'. Head towards the harbour. 'Korringaweg' runs parallel to the banks of Oosterschelde.
The institute is about 7 km. from the A58 highway to Vlissingen. You reach the A58 from the north and east via Roosendaal, proceed to Bergen-op-Zoom and Vlissingen from the south via Antwerp (leave at exit Bergen-op-Zoom on the Antwerp ring). Leave the A58 at the exit 33 Hansweert-Yerseke, turn right on the dike, cross the railway and after about 2 km. look for the (black and white) sign Korringaweg (second road to the right after crossing the railway). You arrive in the mussel industry area where NIOO-KNAW is the large white building you cannot miss.
